Journey to New York City After college, I started singing in New York and became a professional concert and opera singer. It was a great job with the New York Coral artists behind Leonard Bernstein. After about six months, I took shahada and left my performing career.
Challenges of Embracing Islam My family was very anti-hijab, especially my brother who eventually disowned me for wearing hijab. Despite resistance from friends and family, I felt anonymous yet empowered by wearing hijab as it shifted the focus from looks to intellect.
Transitioning into Islam I met an Egyptian Muslim at a coffee shop when I was 36 years old which sparked my interest in Islam. After learning more about it over six months, I took shahada and left my performing career without any major event or thought that led me to question my beliefs.

Reactions & Prejudice Most people around reacted negatively towards her conversion including her singer friends ridiculing some ideas while her family opposed the idea of hijab vehemently.
Spreading Awareness About Islam 'People just didn't know.' The lack of awareness about Muslims existed both in Wisconsin where they tried hiding their presence out fear before building relationships with local media as well as post-9/11 prejudice against Muslims due to misinformation spread by Western media
