Saving the temples on the Nile – DW – 02/22/2023

The temples of Ramses II and Cleopatra, along with other monuments, were at risk from looters, earthquakes, floods, and the construction of the Aswan Dam. UNESCO raised $80 million to save them by dismantling and relocating them to higher ground. The complex was cut into 1,036 blocks weighing between seven and 30 tons each. After five years of construction in their new location, the Nubian temples are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
