The Spread of COMMUNISM after 1900 [AP World History] Unit 8 Topic 4 (8.4)

Communism made significant gains in China during the twentieth century.

In 1927, a conflict between Chinese communists and nationalists began over control of China. However, they temporarily united in 1935 to deal with the Japanese invasion. After World War II ended, the civil war resumed between the communists and nationalists for control of China.

Under Mao's leadership, China implemented the Great Leap Forward which involved collectivizing peasant lands and establishing reeducation camps for rebels. However, this policy resulted in a great disaster as harvests failed and millions of people died from famine. Despite this, Mao continued to export grain to maintain the appearance of success.

Land reform was implemented in various countries, such as Iran, Vietnam, India, and Ethiopia. While it had mixed success in some places like India and Ethiopia leading to famine and economic failure, it brought positive changes for tenants in Kerala state of India.

The narrator lists seven important messages that every child should hear, including expressions of love and pride, apologies and forgiveness, the importance of listening, the failure of communism in history, and believing in oneself.
