Recognizing Needs Behind Emotions We must not attribute responsibility for our feelings to others. Instead of saying someone makes us feel a certain way, we recognize that the root of emotions is needs. Certain persistent feelings like anger or depression indicate disconnection from our needs.

Valuable Indicators: Anger and Guilt Feelings such as anger and guilt are valuable indicators showing we're disconnected from our needs. These emotions arise when we've chosen judgmental thinking over direct connection with what we need.

Distinguishing Needs From Strategies Needs themselves do not imply specific ways to fulfill them; these are preferences or strategies called requests. It's crucial to distinguish between universal human needs and individual strategies for meeting those needs.

'Power With People': The Essence of Giraffe Language 'Giraffe language' enhances power with people by increasing their willingness to give joyfully rather than out of fear or desire for reward, unlike 'power over' models using punishment or rewards which lead only to compliance without genuine contribution.
