Kirk Dreyer, a park naturalist at Marcy Point Nature Center, has been working with stone since 1985. He learned from experts and today he is using Texas Cretaceous Flint to create a Fox Creek spear point. Flint breaks with a conchoidal fracture, producing shell-shaped flakes. Kirk starts by breaking off pieces of the flint nodule using a hammerstone and then uses an antler baton to remove large flakes. Each flake can be used to make various tools like knife blades and scrapers.
