Introduction
00:00:00The femoral triangle is a triangular depression located on the anterior aspect of the upper third of the thigh, just below the inguinal ligament. It lies between lateral and medial aspects, with key landmarks including structures like Asis (anterior superior iliac spine), Sartorius muscle, and inguinal ligament. This anatomical region serves as an important reference point for understanding various medical and physiological functions.
Boundaries
00:00:50The femoral triangle is a triangular depression located on the front upper third of the thigh, just below the inguinal ligament. It is bounded laterally by the medial border of Sartorius muscle, medially by adductor longus muscle's medial border, with its base formed by the inguinal ligament and apex directed downward where lateral and medial boundaries meet. The roof comprises skin, superficial fascia (containing structures like superficial inguinal lymph nodes, branches from nerves such as ilioinguinal nerve), deep fascia; while its floor includes muscles—adductor longus/pectineus medially & psoas major/iliacus laterally.
Contents of Femoral Triangle
00:03:34Key Structures of the Femoral Triangle The femoral triangle contains several critical structures organized systematically. The femoral artery, originating at the mid-inguinal point and extending to the apex of the triangle, gives off six branches—three superficial and three deep. Accompanying it is the femoral vein, which lies medial or posteromedial to it depending on location within the triangle; this vein receives tributaries like great saphenous and circumflex veins. Enclosing these vessels' upper four centimeters is a thin sheath called the femoral sheath.
Nerves and Lymph Nodes in Relation to Femoral Triangle Several nerves traverse or are associated with specific regions of this anatomical area: The lateral-positioned femoral nerve outside its sheath connects iliacus-psoas groove while giving rise near inguinal ligament towards pectineus muscle anteriorly via another branch supplying skin coverage overlying triangles (genitofem). Lastly lymphatic drainage occurs through deeply situated nodes medially aligned above venous proximities receiving inputs superficials counterparts elsewhere body-wide network interconnectivity Femoral Sheath
00:09:43The femoral sheath is a funnel-shaped sleeve of fascia that encloses the upper 3-4 cm of femoral vessels. It forms from the downward extension of two abdominal fascia layers: the anterior wall derives from fascia transversalis, located deep to the transversus abdominis muscle, while its posterior wall originates from fascia iliaca covering the iliacus muscle. The sheath's asymmetrical structure features a vertical lateral wall and an oblique medial wall directed downwards and laterally. Internally divided by septa into three compartments—the arterial (lateral), venous (intermediate), and lymphatic (medial)—it houses key structures such as arteries, veins, nerves, and lymph nodes.
Femoral Canal
00:13:07The femoral canal is a medial compartment within the femoral sheath, conical in shape, wider at its base (1.5 cm wide) and narrowing below. Its upper end forms the femoral ring, bounded anteriorly by the inguinal ligament, posteriorly by pectineus muscle with its fascia covering (pectinyl fascia), medially by lacunar ligament's concave margin, and laterally by a septum separating it from the femoral vein. The ring is sealed with extraperitoneal connective tissue called the femoral septum; above this lies parietal peritoneum forming a depression known as the femoral fossa.
Clinical Anatomy
00:15:53The femoral triangle is a region prone to clinical conditions such as femoral hernia and injuries to the femoral nerve. A femoral hernia occurs when abdominal contents bulge through the weak area in the abdominal wall, known as the femoral canal; this condition is more prevalent among females. Injury to the femoral nerve can lead to sensory loss on both anterior thigh and front leg areas.
