Total Physical Response (TPR)

Action stories use Total Physical Response (TPR) to mirror first-language acquisition: children listen, watch, and imitate before speaking, engaging visual, auditory, and kinesthetic channels for holistic, learning-by-doing comprehension. Begin by teaching a few key words (plane, car, teddy, doll), then introduce short sentences gradually in a fixed sequence with constant recycling, while children imitate modeled actions like stand up, fly your plane, drive your car, hug your teddy, and kiss your doll. Next, keep the same order but remove the model so children perform the actions by listening alone, supported by the security of the group. Then scramble the sequence to verify and deepen understanding as children respond accurately to mixed commands. Finally, consolidate and assess comprehension with an audio action story and a worksheet that requires ordering pictures, marking numbers or dice dots when numerals are not yet known.
